Course Overview

This course gives an introduction to various aspects of Karnataka music in particular and Indian music in general. It helps the learner to understand music from historic, musical and technical perspectives both in terms of the contemporary practice of Karnataka music and shastra-based thought processes.

The course includes listening activities that will help the learner to experience the melody and aesthetics of Karnataka music, and thereby emphasises the need to be able to recognise tonal patterns and melodic forms of the rendition in order to understand the technical and shastraic aspects of the knowledge system.
